Star Trek, the original series, is one of Ed's favorite science fiction series. The
first props he ever had used in a Star Trek production were a futuristic microscope
and a somewhat more conventional looking fire extinguisher, both used in
Star
Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
. Veteran Star Trek alumnus D. C. Fontana liked
Ed's work, especially the aforementioned items that were owned by the prop house
Modern Props in El Monte, California. Ms. Fontana managed to convince the
production team to use the microscope for the scenes aboard Regula Station, and
the extinguisher was used on the Reliant bridge set.
When Star Trek: The Next Generation began production, Ed was one of the prop
designers considered for the production team. Even though that job went to Rick
Sternbach, their lead production designer, they still used some of Ed's props as
alien tools and weapons in the series.
Ed proposed a redesigned phaser and a Romulan disruptor for Star Trek V: The
Final Frontier
, as well as designs on paper for other props, at the behest of his
agent. The producers liked the proposed weapons, but we were informed that the
director, William Shatner, was looking for something different. (Mr. Shatner was
rumored to have thought they were "too effeminate".)
The latest incarnation, Star Trek: Voyager, has used Ed's props in several episodes,
again as alien weapons or instruments. So keep watching: there's no telling where in
the Delta Quadrant you might see Ed Kline's work.
The phaser submitted to the Star Trek V production staff,
which was rejected due to the "director's vision". It was stolen
from the workshop of Ed's agent. If you know the
whereabouts of this prop, please email us.
A prop submitted to be the Romulan disruptor for Star Trek
V. Dubbed the "Ice Cream Scoop" due to the rounded
shape on the top. It was stolen from the workshop of Ed's
agent. If you know the whereabouts of this prop, please
email us.
The actual letter from one of the producers of Star Trek V
turning down the proposed props. An interesting look behind
the scenes of the glamorous movie business!
The fire extinguisher from Star Trek II, actually used aboard
the Reliant. Now owned by Modern Props.
This microscope can be seen in the background in a couple
of shots aboard the Regula Station in Star Trek II, and also
found its way onto a set of Murder, She Wrote. Owned by
Modern Props.
This is a photo in a convention book from a science fiction
convention in Japan. Apparently Ed's props were quite
popular in Japan. Again, it was stolen from the workshop of
Ed's agent. If you know the whereabouts of this prop, please
email us.

Two of Ed's props used as medical / research instruments,
doing horrible things to Captain Janeway. The poor quality
of the image is due to a special filter used to film the scene.
Both are owned by Modern Props.
