From his early childhood, Ed was always drawing pictures. At first it was
space ships and monsters from the old Buster Crabbe
Flash Gordon serials,
Commando Cody: Sky Marshall of the Universe, Buzz Cory: Space Cadet,
Captain Video, and Space Patrol. This was where he got his first exposure to the
many worlds and exotic peoples of science fiction.
He began reading the old sci-fi comic books, like Mystery in Space, Strange
Adventures, Weird Tales and Astounding Tales. This led him to read Ace Double
novels, and other pulp science fiction with covers by such classic fantasy artists as
Kelly Freas, John Schoenherr, and Ed Emsh, among others. He began to imagine
his own worlds, each populated with their own unique creatures. The desire to
express and give form to these creatures is what drove Ed to improve his art
technique over the years.
When Ed discovered science fiction conventions in the early Seventies, he found
other people who would appreciate his work. He started showing and eventually
selling his art in convention art shows all up and down the West Coast. Most of
the work on this set of pages is from his convention work. Unfortunately, most of
the finished items were long ago sold, but some of the finished products and many
of the studies and preliminary drawings are represented here.
If you own one of Ed's original pieces of art, or know of someone who does, we
would love to have good photographs or scans of them for display here. Just
email us and let us know, and we'll be happy to give the collector a "Courtesy Of"
credit on the page where the art appears.
